Description:  Date approximate. The geep is just passing the switch stands for the two sidings on either side of the main. The glass factory siding is full of hoppers, either headed to (loaded) or from (empty) the docks. The NYC is about 100 ft. to the right, barely visible. Note the poplars (aka lightning rods) lining the border between the NYC and the cemetery. Note also the RR signal lines (poles) down the center between the two tracks. Lastly, take a look at the billboard - after all these years, Reithoffer Shows are still in business.

Description:  Date approximate. Lots to unpack here. Looks like a Chevy II waiting at the crossing. At the Chevron gas station (featuring Champion spark plugs), parked on the side are a two-tone '58 Chevy and what appears to be a '57 Chevy wagon with a missing front bumper. Romig's Tavern (center of the building in the rear) is offering Hot Fish & Chips "to take home". The barber shop offers "college cuts" (whatever they are ...) and Mary Creasy's Beauty Shoppe anchors the end of the plaza. The orange and green trailers were rented out by the gas station.

Romig's still survives and now occupies the entire plaza. The RR signal lines are gone and the poplars have been chopped down. And the NYC is now CSX (how does THAT happen?).

Description:  Single stack B&O 9411 (B&O class SE-3, according to the stenciling above the builder's plate) idles behind Romig's while the crew is at lunch. The NP boxcars are destined for Matthews & Fields on Stonewood. In the background, note the poplar trees that dot the property line between the cemetery and the NYC Charlotte branch, just a stone's throw on the other side of the engine. Poplars attract lighting strikes like no other (lots of water content), so they have become less desirable as border plantings.

Description:  Today, Romig's Tavern occupies the entire plaza building on Bennington. In the summer of 1966 however, Romig's had only one storefront out of many businesses in the plaza, located about in the middle. Other businesses at that time (they came and went over the years, of course) included a TV repair shop (where we picked up scrap TV parts for our model railroad needs), a liquor store, a barbershop, and (Mary) Creasy's Beauty Shoppe, the last located at the end of the building, right next to the tracks. The end of the plaza casts an afternoon shadow on C2602 while the crew is inside Romig's for lunch.

Description:  Exact date unknown. Probably summer 1966. This was a Saturday move, lighter than most. The crew has finished its Kodak work and is leaving for the day. In order, 9610, a single Matthews & Fields load (NP boxcar), the caboose, and a string of Kodak go-aways to be left on the main between McCall and the Ridge while the crew heads north. Remarkably, Wehner Mower is still a going concern 50 some odd years later !!

Description:  This view is from the sidewalk looking south towards the Kodak gate. The twins were shoving a cut of loaded hoppers into Kodak and split the switch with the usual effects. The switch (under the hopper in the foreground) allowed a short runaround to come in off the main from the south and join with the lead. The tool car off to the left is on the team track which came off the runaround. I never saw either used and both were torn out in the 70's.

Nobody's going anywhere - the shove move into Kodak put a couple of hoppers on the ground. The crew cut them off and pulled over the Ridge to clear the crossing.

Description:  Date approximate. This is the tail track viewed looking to the north. The switch in the foreground on the right (behind the phone pole) was for the pair of tracks on the dock itself. The switch in the background, dead center on the tail track, allowed cars to be pulled from the yard (behind me to the left) and shoved out onto either of the dock leads. Locomotives were not permitted on the dock structure itself (posted sign: "no locomotives past this point" or similar wording - sorry, no photo), so each cut of cars was placed on a previous cut and shoved out until the leads were "full". Gravity takes it from there. Typical operation involved pulling a cut of loads from the yard (maybe 7-8 cars) past the switch, stopping to tie down the hand brake and open the knuckle on the lead car, then flipping the switch and shoving out onto either of the dock leads. If it looks like the tail track rises slightly going away from the camera (which would make sense), it probably does. I don't remember. If anything, it was at least level. The areas on either side descend toward the turning basin and the river, so the tail track was built on an embankment. It's still there today, should you want to go for a hike. You'll find some rotting ties and maybe a leftover spike or two. With regard to the Feldspar leads, the diamond had to have been between the two switches, but there's no evidence of it in this photo. It had to have been long gone before I got there.

Description:  No, it's not 1971 anymore. This is today's [approximate] view of the tail track in photo 4 of 6. Obviously, a lot of dirt has been pushed around since 1971. The path behind the swinging gates descends to the turning basin and the river. The remnants of the tail track are to the left of the path. It's hard to tell with everything leafed out, but in the dead of winter, you should be able to see the tail track appear to rise on your left as you walk down the path.

Description:  A lot of stuff in this view: At left is the current CSX (old NYC) Charlotte branch. The large facilty is the current International Paper (former Weyerhaeuser) plant, aka Rochester Folding Box, the last northern-most customer as of today (October 2020) on the Charlotte branch. [The track is OOS just to the north, slighly outside this view] The road at the bottom is Boxart Street, which now terminates at the Turning Point Park parking lots, which appear as a pair of blacktopped rectangles. The visible paved pathway (running north-south) leads from the parking lots down to the river. Just to the left (running roughly 6 o'clock to 11 o'clock) are the remnants of the tail track. If you go for a hike, you'll find it. Somewhere in the woods between the current CSX and the tail track was the location of the Roberts Dock, a predecessor of the Yates Dock, itself a predecessor of the Charlotte Dock. Years of operation for the Roberts and Yates docks are unknown to me. I assume operation of the Yates and Charlotte docks overlapped until the Charlotte docks became fully functional, obviating the need for the Yates dock. [The Yates dock location is to the north, out of view] There are paths (some paved!) in the Roberts dock area , but nothing to indicate the presence of a facility, in this case, gone for more than a century. Just for good measure, off to the far right and across the river, the roadbed of the former NYC State Street branch is visible in the trees, in the West Irondequoit neighborhood known as "The Flats".

Description:  Date approximate. Could be '73 or '74. The view is from the glass factory roughly north to Dock Junction. The two switch stands on the left are for the glass factory siding and the siding on the opposite side as they connect back to the main (center). A couple of car lengths later, two more sidings emerge, one of which holds a covered hopper for the cement plant at the end of Boxart Street. The Dock Junction concrete phone booth is evident (almost head on) as the tracks curve to the left toward Stonewood. More switch stands are faintly visible to the left of the phone booth. Normally, everything would be filled with coal hoppers, both empty and loaded, but the docks are closed and nature is taking over. The RG&E power lines (left side) have since been replaced. The B&O poles (right) are simply gone today. The concrete whistle post next to the switch stands in the foreground is for Dewey Ave.

The two switch stands are for the glass factory siding (right) and the siding on the opposite side (left, NYC or cemetery side) as they connect back to the main (center). The poplars on the left are on the property line between the cemetery and the NYC (out of sight, also on the left). The track walker is almost to Dewey Avenue. Romig's is in the plaza to the right. The RR poles (both NYC & B&O) in the middle between the two lines are gone today. The whistle post next to the switch stand on the right is for McCall Road (yes, even though it is located before Dewey). Rules, regulations and distances dictate placement.

Description:  Brakeman Jack Kyle on the pilot. This view is to the north just a stone's throw from Latta Rd. The train is on the Lake Ontario State Parkway overpass and has just dropped off a car at the NYC (PC) interchange. I can't tell what it is, but it looks like a couple of storage tanks tied down on a flat car. Probably farm equipment. Neither the tracks nor the bridge exist today. The bridge was removed as part of the O'Rorke bridge project.
