PC 1775 and others in 1972 - shot 1 of 3 |
Description: |
This shot is from February 1972 in the PC days. I'm standing a few hundred feet south of Ridge Rd. on the east side of the NYC, pointing the camera north. What looks to be structure on the extreme right is actually the billboard close to the Ridge, so that should give you an idea of the location and distance. B&O 6541 and 5928 are waiting patiently on the B&O main for the Kodak security guard to arrive and open up the gate. The 1st Belt job is returning from Charlotte with F's 1775, 1784 and ? running elephant style and GP9B 3827 tucked in the rear. RS-1's were the norm in the '60s, followed briefly by RS2/3's. Before the second generation Alcos (RS-32 and similar) arrived, PC got their monies' worth out of the last of the first generation EMDs by putting them in local service. F7A-GP9B-F7A lash-ups were common on Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse local jobs. |

B&O 6455 crossing Dewey Ave. - 1 of 4 |
Description: |
Date approximate. The geep is just passing the switch stands for the two sidings on either side of the main. The glass factory siding is full of hoppers, either headed to (loaded) or from (empty) the docks. The NYC is about 100 ft. to the right, barely visible. Note the poplars (aka lightning rods) lining the border between the NYC and the cemetery. Note also the RR signal lines (poles) down the center between the two tracks. Lastly, take a look at the billboard - after all these years, Reithoffer Shows are still in business. |

B&O 6455 crossing Dewey Ave. - 2 of 4 |
Description: |
Date approximate. Lots to unpack here. Looks like a Chevy II waiting at the crossing. At the Chevron gas station (featuring Champion spark plugs), parked on the side are a two-tone '58 Chevy and what appears to be a '57 Chevy wagon with a missing front bumper. Romig's Tavern (center of the building in the rear) is offering Hot Fish & Chips "to take home". The barber shop offers "college cuts" (whatever they are ...) and Mary Creasy's Beauty Shoppe anchors the end of the plaza. The orange and green trailers were rented out by the gas station. |

B&O 6455 crossing Dewey Ave. - 3 of 4 |
Description: |
Date approximate. Classic style B&O paint scheme on the geep. The two empty box cars are from either Matthews & Fields (Stonewood) or Greece Lumber (Latta Rd.), followed by an equally classic I-10 caboose. Not to be outdone by GM, an easily spotted 1960 Ford waits for the train to clear. |

B&O 6455 crossing Dewey Ave. - 4 of 4 |
Description: |
No, it's not 1965. This is today's google maps view. Chevron is gone, as are all the GMs and Fords (and the GP9). Brush has overtaken the B&O (now R&S). Romig's still survives and now occupies the entire plaza. The RR signal lines are gone and the poplars have been chopped down. And the NYC is now CSX (how does THAT happen?). |

Latta Rd. & the NYC interchange - 1 of 7 - summer 1974 |
Description: |
Brakeman Jack Kyle on the pilot. This view is to the north just a stone's throw from Latta Rd. The train is on the Lake Ontario State Parkway overpass and has just dropped off a car at the NYC (PC) interchange. I can't tell what it is, but it looks like a couple of storage tanks tied down on a flat car. Probably farm equipment. Neither the tracks nor the bridge exist today. The bridge was removed as part of the O'Rorke bridge project. |

Road power visits Kodak and M&F - Spring 1973 - photo 6 of 8 |
Description: |
It was not uncommon for the crew to take anything for down below (Matthews & Fields, Greece Lumber, the Hojack, etc.) inside Kodak along with the cuts of coal hoppers as it was easier to sort everything in Kodak's yard and avoid crossing Ridge Rd. repeatedly. In this shot, the crew is done with Kodak and is leaving the property with a single NP boxcar for Matthews & Fields. |
